About the Role :

The AI Engineering Manager position entails the leadership of MCO global product development teams across the entirety of the software development life cycle, with a focus on building AI-enabled compliance products. This role centres on our MEAN stack platform (MongoDB, Express.js, Angular, Node.js) hosted on AWS, with MongoDB Atlas as the primary data layer, and on integrating Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and other AI/ML capabilities into our products at scale.

Key responsibilities encompass ensuring the quality of team outputs and optimising customer experiences, along with maintaining strict adherence to coding standards and promoting automation initiatives. The role involves mentoring and guiding engineers, proactively identifying and mitigating technical and AI-related risks, and facilitating effective communication between engineering, product, compliance, and other stakeholders. The manager oversees deployment processes across AWS infrastructure, monitors system performance, provides decisive technical leadership during incidents, and champions responsible AI practices across the organisation.

Responsibilities :

Agile & Team Leadership :

- Own the effectiveness of the Scrum Agile process and adherence to good agile practices for the team.

- Be responsible for the quality of the teams' outputs and the customer experience of our products.

- Lead product development teams through all stages of the SDLC, from requirements gathering through production deployment on AWS.

- Foster a collaborative and innovative engineering culture focused on delivering high-quality software products.

- Mentor and coach engineers to foster their technical growth and career development, with emphasis on modern JavaScript/TypeScript best practices.

- Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and career development conversations; participate actively in hiring to build and retain a strong engineering team.

Technical Leadership :

AI & Responsible AI :

- Drive the design and implementation of LLM-based features within Node.js back-end services and Angular front-end experiences - including RAG pipelines, embeddings, vector search, and AI assistants.

- Define patterns and reusable components for integrating AI/ML services into MEAN stack applications, ensuring performance, cost, and reliability targets are met.

- Champion responsible AI practices - ensuring solutions are ethical, explainable, secure, and compliant with regulatory and organisational standards.

- Evaluate emerging AI technologies, models, and frameworks; recommend and pilot adoption where they create measurable value for our products and customers.

- Partner with compliance and product teams to ensure AI-enabled features meet regulatory expectations relevant to financial services.

MEAN Stack, AWS & AI :

- Hands-on participation in all technical activities including architecture and design reviews, code reviews, coding, troubleshooting, and defect triage across the MEAN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, Angular, Node.js).

- Define and enforce coding standards and best practices within the engineering team for TypeScript/JavaScript, Angular component architecture, RESTful API design, and Node.js services.

- Conduct code reviews and ensure high code quality and adherence to engineering standards across the full stack and AI integration layers.

- Oversee MongoDB Atlas configuration, schema design, indexing strategies, aggregation pipelines, change streams, and data migration processes.

- Drive architecture decisions for AWS services including EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, S3, CloudFront, API Gateway, SQS, SNS, and related infrastructure.

- Identify technical risks and challenges early in the project lifecycle and propose mitigation strategies, particularly around scalability, security, cloud cost optimisation, and AI model risk.

- Maintain hands-on involvement with coding approximately 20% of the time.

Delivery & Operations :

- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate product requirements into technical specifications for both application features and AI capabilities.

- Drive automation in the engineering teams, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (Terraform/CloudFormation), and automated testing across application and AI components.

- Drive continuous improvement in development processes and tools to increase efficiency and quality.

- Act as a technical liaison between engineering, product management, compliance, and other stakeholders.

- Coordinate with Platform Test teams to ensure thorough testing and validation of software products, including evaluation of AI outputs.

- Oversee deployment and release processes using AWS-based CI/CD to ensure smooth and reliable product launches.

- Monitor system performance via CloudWatch, application logging, APM tooling, and AI-specific observability; address technical issues promptly to maintain product stability.

- Provide technical leadership during incidents and outages, facilitating root cause analysis and resolution across the application, infrastructure, and AI layers.

Experiences and Skills :

- 12+ years of experience in product development (including up to 3 years in engineering management).

- Strong full-stack engineering experience with the MEAN stack: MongoDB, Express.js, Angular, and Node.js in a product development environment.

- Proven experience designing and operating production workloads on AWS, including services such as EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, S3, CloudFront, and RDS/DocumentDB or MongoDB Atlas.

- Hands-on proficiency with MongoDB Atlas: cluster management, performance tuning, indexing, aggregation framework, change streams, and backup/restore strategies.

- Demonstrable experience integrating AI/ML capabilities into production applications - including LLM-based features, RAG patterns, embeddings, and vector search.

- Working knowledge of responsible AI frameworks and the ability to embed security, privacy, and compliance considerations into the SDLC.

- Maintain hands-on involvement with coding approximately 20% of the time.

- Expertise in architecture and design reviews, system design, code reviews, customer issues, troubleshooting, and defect triage.

- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to resolve complex distributed-systems issues.

- Demonstrates resilience and flexibility, consistently adapting while managing priorities with efficiency.

- A strong willingness to learn and a growth mindset.

- Excellent communication and servant-leadership skills.

- Knowledge and experience of agile development methodology (Scrum, Agile, and Kanban).

Preferred :

- Experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or CDK).

- Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS ECS/EKS).

- Experience with event-driven architectures, message queues (SQS, SNS, Kafka), and microservices patterns.

- Background in a product-driven SaaS or financial services company.

- Deeper ML/MLOps background - experience with model fine-tuning, evaluation frameworks, prompt engineering at scale, or vector database operations (e.g., Pinecone, Weaviate, OpenSearch, pgvector).

- Architect-level experience is a plus.
